Sierra Leone

In the last five years, Sierra Leone has increased its weight on the global precious minerals export scene. This has been a major boost to its domestic economy.

Mining operations

Sierra Leone is a republic with important natural resources, mining being undoubtedly one of those with the greatest potential for growth and which is expected to be one of the pillars of the country’s future development, diamond mining having been, until recently, the driving force of the mining industry and, from an economic point of view, the main export product and the country’s main source of foreign exchange.

There is currently a notable increase of interest in the mining field, which is manifested in the diversity of projects that are being deployed in different parts of the country.

In this context, the Spanish companies, S.A. HULLERA VASCO LEONESA and GRUPO PEAL began to show interest in 2010 in the mining possibilities of an area located in the central area of Sierra Leone, in the districts of Bombali and Tonkolili.

In the first quarter of 2011, technical staff from the aforementioned companies visited the area to carry out an initial analysis of the mining potential of the area and to make initial contact with local leaders.

The project in Sierra Leone consists of an exploration licence for an area of around 120 square kilometres.

In addition to exploration, the project has a significant humanitarian aid component for the local population, with which it has worked to stimulate growth in the area and improve infrastructure where possible.
